Fashion icon and author Tina Knowles opened up about a deeply personal moment with her daughters Beyonce and Solange Knowles before undergoing surgery last year for stage 1 breast cancer.
The 71-year-old designer shared her story while speaking at the 27th Annual Angel Ball at Cipriani Wall Street in New York City.

Tina, who recently released her memoir ‘Matriarch’ in April, revealed how her family became her rock during the frightening period following her diagnosis last July. What stood out, she said, was a touching and unexpected performance by her daughters right before she was wheeled into surgery.
“My girls sang a gospel song, ‘Walk With Me,’ which I absolutely love,” Tina shared. The moment, she explained, brought her comfort and calm at a time filled with fear and uncertainty. “I went in there laughing and feeling so blessed, like everything was going to be okay. And it was. It so warms my heart.”
She also recalled a lighter, playful moment when her daughters made her laugh just before the procedure. Inspired by a viral TikTok trend called the “demure trend”, created by creator Jools Lebron, Beyonce and Solange showed Tina the video and kept joking with her about it.
“There was this woman who was saying, ‘You have to be demure,’ and they just kept saying this and showing me that video,” Tina said. “It gave me so much joy at that moment.”
In her memoir, Tina Knowles details how her daughters reacted to the news of her cancer diagnosis. She described Beyonce as staying calm and positive, focusing her energy on supporting her mother with determination and care. Solange, meanwhile, reassured her: “Mom, we are going to take care of this.” Their love and support, Tina said, felt like having a team at her side.
Tina also mentioned that her support circle included bonus daughters Kelly Rowland and her niece Angie Beyince, all of whom contributed to making her feel loved and safe during a very challenging time. “My girls became my team,” she wrote.
